Devin Vanderhoff, 25, is charged with driving to Monterey County from his home in British Columbia, Canada, and following the woman for several days. Vanderhoef is accused of knocking on the woman’s door while carrying a parcel and pretending to be a delivery driver, with the assistance of a friend, Darius Whyte, who is charged as an accomplice.
According to the authorities, Vanderhoff started stabbing the woman’s boyfriend as he answered the door. Then the woman snatched up a weapon and began protecting her partner. At that point, deputies reported that the suspect stabbed and strangled her as she retaliated.
Vanderhoef dropped the box he was holding at one point. “That box contained a pair of handcuffs, multiple knives and duct tape,” said Monterey County Sheriff’s Commander Andres Rosas. “We are very fortunate that nothing worse than what happened did happen. We have no idea what the intentions were with these items, but they couldn’t have been good.”
According to investigators, all of the victims and suspects survived despite suffering mild to serious injuries. Authorities detained Whyte before he could return to Canada after discovering him sitting in an aircraft at the San Jose Airport. The bail amount for Vaderhoef is $4.15 million. Both men are charged with attempted murder and other offenses.
