LUMUMBA bus drivers have bought 12 hectares of land in Muchenje village in Mungule chiefdom in Chibombo, Central Province.

The piece of traditional land costs K450, 000 and is meant to secure the future of bus drivers who are beneficiaries.

Chazanga 1015 route chairman Pethias Nenguke said the land will be shared to 220 bus drivers and each driver will be given 30 metres by 30 metres parcel of land.

Mr Nenguke said the initiative was triggered by the drivers’ realisation that they did not have pension and wobbled into destitution, upon loss of employment.

“We drivers suffer a lot when we lose our job because there is no pension for bus drivers.

“This is a good development for our bus drivers because our children and wives will be safe,” he said.

Mr Nenguke told reporters that the money to buy land was raised through bus drivers’ daily contributions of a K40, as a bus leaves the station.

That K40 and at the end of the year the money is shared among drivers.
